Congressman Steny H. Hoyer of Mechanicsville represents Maryland's Fifth Congressional District, which includes Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's counties and portions of Prince George's and Anne Arundel counties.
The parts of Anne Arundel and Prince George’s County that are in the Fifth District are within close proximity to the Washington, DC and Baltimore metropolitan areas. Included in these counties are: College Park, home of the flagship campus of the University of Maryland, and the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, where the Hubble Space Telescope was launched.
The three counties that comprise the Southern part of the 5th District are Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s. This area was first settled by the Calvert Family of the Lords Baltimore, who founded the capital of St. Mary's City in 1634. Shortly thereafter, Maryland became one of the two great tobacco colonies. Today, Southern Maryland is a favorite destination for tourists and is famous for its beautiful coastline, water recreation, and fresh seafood that comes straight out of the Chesapeake Bay.
