Hillsborough

  • Congressman Ferguson successfully persuaded the Pentagon to remove nearly 3,000 tons of toxic mercury from the Defense Logistics Agency depot on Route 206 in Hillsborough. The mercury is scheduled to be transferred to an Army base in Nevada beginning in the summer of 2007. Congressman Ferguson hosted community town meetings in Hillsborough with military officials to discuss the scheduled mercury shipment, and he pledged to ensure the Pentagon thoroughly cleans up any contaminated areas of the 57-acre depot.
  • The Federal Aviation Administration awarded Central Jersey Regional Airport in Hillsborough $2.1 million to renovate its runway.
  • Congressman Ferguson selected Casey Maxwell of Hillsborough for the Congressional Award Service Medal, which recognizes young people who seek to improve themselves and their community. Casey, 17, earned her medal by preparing food for local food banks, visiting senior citizen facilities in the area and donating a collection of items to county animal shelters.
  • Congressman Ferguson secured $844,000 to replace the Amwell Road bridge above the Neshanic River in Hillsborough. The project also calls for the new lanes to be wider then those on the current bridge.
  • Congressman Ferguson nominated Jared Wagner of Hillsborough, Robert Wolf of Hillsborough and Benjamin Salvito of Hillsborough to the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.
  • Congressman Ferguson secured more than $10 million to make improvements along an eight-mile section of Route 22 in Somerset County – one of the most dangerous roads in New Jersey. The Route 22 Sustainable Corridor Project is expected to break ground in 2007 between Routes 202-206 and Chimney Rock Road in Bridgewater. The project includes building new interchanges and overpasses, eliminating dangerous U-turns in the medians, and creating local and express lanes between Interstate 287 and Routes 202-206.
  • Hillsborough Fire Department received a $297,000 first-responder grant from the Homeland Security Department to purchase new safety equipment.
