  • The St. John’s Emergency Medical Services, Inc. in Fords received a $28,405 federal first-responder grant from the Homeland Security Department to purchase 23 new specially designed suits used by emergency medical technicians. The suits will protect the EMT’s when they respond to accident scenes, where broken glass, metal fragments, spilled fuel, and chemicals routinely pose hazards to rescue personnel.
  • The Colonia Volunteer Fire Department in Woodbridge received a $325,000 first-responder grant from the Homeland Security Department to recruit new members for the 50-member, all-volunteer force. The Woodbridge grant – the third-largest awarded to first responders in the 7th District since Sept. 11, 2001 – also will be used to expand training for the department’s current firefighters.

  • Congressman Ferguson voted for $3.8 million to finance the design phase of upgrading several interchanges along Route 1 in Woodbridge and Edison, add ramps between Routes 1 and 9 and Randolph Avenue, and replace a bridge that carries Routes 1 and 9 traffic above Route 35.

  • The Woodbridge Police Department received a $13,834 grant from the Homeland Security Department to purchase night-vision equipment.

  • Congressman Ferguson voted to provide Woodbridge public schools with more than $1.2 million in federal elementary and secondary education aid in fiscal year 2007. Congressman Ferguson has voted to increase federal education funding for New Jersey schools by more than 33 percent since 2001.

  • Congressman Ferguson nominated Ryan Daily of Woodbridge to the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y., and David Heuwetter III of Iselin to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
  • The St. John’s First Aid Squad in the Fords section of Woodbridge received a $29,336 first-responder grant from the Homeland Security Department to purchase new equipment, including an exhaust removal system for the firehouse. Congressman Ferguson visited the squad’s headquarters and made the announcement with Chuck Collins, president of the St. John’s First Aid Squa
