I started the Congressional Scholars Program in North Carolina’s 8th District in 2002.  The Congressional Scholars Program assists teachers in bringing the American Memory program, the online digitized resources of the Library of Congress, directly to their classrooms.  Through this program, public school teachers that participate in this program will receive specialized training in how to search, download, and utilize the digitized resources in the classroom.  The participating teachers will also be given laptop computers to use in their classroom.  Since its inception, 280 teachers across the district have completed the program.

 

The mission of the Congressional Scholars is to provide participating teachers with the needed resources to educate our youth on the technological skills they will need to succeed in tomorrow’s world.  Our students represent our future and deserve the best educational opportunities. I’ve worked hard to help make this program a reality because I believe that The Congressional Scholars Program provides our teachers with an important additional educational resource directly in their classrooms.

 

Fayetteville Technical Community College facilitates the course instruction in the eastern part of the 8th District, and Stanly Community College administers the program in the western part of the district. Contact information for teachers who would like to apply for the 2009 program that begins in January can be found below.
