Welcome to the 8th Congressional District
Issue-War on Terror

As an active member of the House Armed Services Committee, I feel that our national security must be a top priority.

The War on Terror has different fronts and is being waged in different ways.  Al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations thrive on poverty, despair, violence and fear, and the bottom line is, they cannot afford for freedom to succeed.

Conversely, we cannot afford to allow freedom to fail.  Ultimately, this is a war we must win using all the assets at our disposal - legal, diplomatic, law enforcement and military.

I recently voted to support our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan with the equipment and funding they need (H.R. 2207) , but I could not support a funding bill that tied the hands of our soldiers and put Congress in the business of plotting military strategy. (H.R. 1591)

Ultimately, there are many threats across the globe beyond the terrorist threat posed by groups like al Qaeda: North Korea has nuclear weapons; Iran is rapidly developing a nuclear program; China is building its military and showed the world that it's ready to wage war in space.  We must have a strong  military to ensure that we can counter the threats that exist and the threats that are emerging.

The recent National Defense Authorization Act,H.R. 1585,

will increase the number of active duty Army and Marine Corps personnel; increased pay for our soldiers; considerable funding for body armor and new up-armored Humvees; and $1 billion for National Guard equipment.
