Gas Prices

Central Washington residents are right to demand Congress act now to lower gas and diesel prices.  I support an all-of-the-above energy plan to lower gas and diesel prices that includes: (1) promoting alternative energy sources like wind and solar, (2) expanding nuclear power, (3) protecting hydropower dams, and (4) drilling offshore, in Alaska, and on federal lands.

Ways to Lower Gas Prices

  • Tap into our nation’s oil and gas reserves by drilling in Alaska, off our coastline and on federal lands

  • Make it easier to build and license refineries in America

  • Expand wind, solar, hydrogen fuel cells and other new energy sources
  • Reduce fuel blend mandates that increase costs
  • Build more nuclear plants
  • Invest in more hydropower

  • No new gas taxes.

Congressman Hastings believes our nation must get serious about producing more American-made energy if we are ever to reduce gas prices.  That means confronting our dependence on foreign oil and taking matters into our own hands by accessing the billions of barrels of known reserves here in America.

Consider this: Alaska’s ANWR region contains an estimated 10.4 billion barrels of oil.  That’s more than twice the proven oil reserves in Texas.  The oceans off America’s coastline contain 240 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 86 billion barrels of oil.  Federal lands contain an estimated 31 billion barrels of oil.

The way to combat rising prices due to high demand is to increase supply by tapping into these resources.  More oil means lower prices.  Yet, these reserves have been put off limits.  Proposals to increase domestic oil and gas production have faced years of opposition.  Drilling in a tiny portion of ANWR, for example, has been blocked since President Clinton vetoed it in 1995 – and now Americans are paying the price.

Congressman Hastings is a cosponsor and supporter of the energy bills listed below.  Despite record gas and diesel prices, House Democrat leaders refuse to allow a vote on any of these bills – or on any proposal that would produce more American-made energy and lower prices.

H.R. 6566  The American Energy Act is an all-of-the-above energy plan aimed at expanding the supply of American-made energy by (1) allowing drilling off America's coasts, in Alaska and on other federal lands, (2) promoting renewable energy sources like hydro, solar and wind, (3) expediting construction of new refineries, and (4) promoting conservation.

H.R. 6107  Opens the Alaskan Coastal Plain to oil and gas exploration and provides funding for development of hydropower, wind and solar and other renewable energy sources.

H.R. 2784 Allows natural gas production off our coasts.

H.R. 2279 Expedites construction and licensing of new refineries in America.

H.R. 3089 Helps open new American refineries, extends the wind production tax credit, and adds tax incentives for new nuclear power plants.

H.R. 2208 Encourages use of clean coal-to-liquid technology.

H.R. 2493 Removes fuel blend mandates that increase the price of gas.

H.R. 6779 Provides funding for hydropower energy production.
