Federal Funds Headed to Perry and Harlan Counties to Assist Homeless
Friday, October 31, 2008
Congressman Harold “Hal” Rogers (KY-05) announced today that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded $316,267 to the Kentucky Mountain Health Alliance to coordinate and provide primary health care and additional services geared toward homeless individuals in Perry and Harlan counties.
“Homelessness creates a series of problems for those affected – job loss, sickness, violence, and a sense of hopelessness and despair,” stated Rogers. “Kentucky Mountain Health Alliance steps into this gap and is a valuable partner in our community toward helping those facing homelessness get basic health care and develop strategies to get back on their feet. I applaud HHS for recognizing the need and the hard work ongoing at clinics in our region.”
Created in 2005, the Kentucky Mountain Health Alliance serves approximately 2,500 homeless and underserved individuals a year in Perry and Harlan Counties. The organization provides primary care, mental health & substance abuse services, preventive care, disease management and enabling services. Homeless services are provided at the Little Flower Clinic in Hazard and the Clover Fork Clinic.
As a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, Rogers works to secure funding for important initiatives in the fifth Congressional district.
