For more than four years now, our nation has sacrificed its soldiers, while the President has failed to support them with a viable strategy to succeed. While I resolutely support the brave men and women already deployed, The Administration must be held accountable for how this war is conducted and for how it will end. We must demonstrate to the Iraqi government that America’s commitment is not open-ended and they must be held accountable for their own security and stability.

The President claimed that the recent surge would provide “breathing room” for the Iraqi government so that it could make much-needed political changes. While I do not dispute Gen. David Petraeus’s conclusion that the surge has brought marginal security improvements, it has done little to reconcile the country’s battling factions. A few fleeting military successes cannot be equated with real strategic progress.

Gen. Petraeus testified that the surge could last through summer of 2008, which I find unacceptable given the current conditions in Iraq. I see no credible sign that the Iraqi government is any more capable of establishing a peaceful, democratic, and united country than before the surge. The country continues to be plagued by substantial violence and its government has failed to show any ability to handle the bloody sectarian strife.

The fact is that our troops are caught in the crossfire of a civil war that has no end in sight. Our men and woman have done an extraordinary job despite the immense challenges and strain thrust upon them. I will continue to see that our military has all the equipment and training they need, but I cannot not support an Administration that puts more troops in harm’s way with no clear goals on how to win the fight. It is time the President be made accountable for his gross mismanagement of this war.

We must put an end to this drain on our nation’s resources, which could be better used on our priorities at home. The war in Iraq has cost American taxpayers a half a trillion dollars and reports indicate that America spends at least $10 billion per month on the war in Iraq. To date, more than 3,700 Americans have lost their lives in Iraq and more than 30,000 have been wounded. The Administration needs to honor the sacrifice of our troops now and provide a clear path toward redeployment.
