Social Security

Preserving Social Security.  As a child, my mother and I received Social Security survivor benefits after the death of my step-father.  That small monthly check made a huge difference for us.  I have experienced first-hand the benefits of these programs.  As your Representative in Congress, I am committed to strengthening Social Security and Medicare for future generations.

Privatization.  I oppose privatization of Social Security.  We must not reduce benefits or raise the retirement age for those at or near retirement.  Congress will debate many different proposals for reforming the Social Security program.  You may be certain that I will not support any plan that reduces benefits.  Your benefits will be paid on time and in full.  All the Social Security reform measures that have been debated to this point have provided that current and near-term retirees will be guaranteed the benefits they have earned.

Government Pension Offset and Windfall Elimination Provision (GPO WEP).  A number of employees in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, including government employees and teachers, are adversely affected by the GPO WEP policies.  I am a co-sponsor of H.R. 82, the Social Security Fairness Act of 2007.  This legislation will repeal the GPO WEP law.  The repeal of this law will restore fundamental fairness to an important part of our Social Security laws.
