Gene Snyder Congressional Fellowship

WHAT:

Congressman Geoff Davis will host a Northern Kentucky University student in his Washington, D.C., office for the 2007 Fall Semester and a Thomas More College student for the 2008 Spring Semester.  The Gene Snyder Congressional Fellow will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including the following listed below: 

  • Researching and tracking legislation
  • Briefing legislative assistants on research
  • Taking notes at Congressional hearings and meetings
  • Drafting letters to constituent inquiries
  • Leading tours of the Capitol Building
  • Performing general day-to-day office duties

WHO CAN APPLY?

Any Northern Kentucky University (fall) or Thomas More College (spring) undergraduate student who is interested in learning first hand how the federal government operates can apply for the Gene Snyder Congressional Fellowship.  Interested applicants should be able to work in a team environment, have strong research, writing, and organizational skills, and possess a similar commitment to public service as demonstrated by Congressman Gene Snyder.

Gene Snyder (1928 - 2007), was born in Louisville and began his career there as a lawyer in 1950.  He was elected as Magistrate for the first district of Jefferson County in 1957, and re-elected in 1961.  Snyder was then elected to the United States House of Representatives from Kentucky's 3rd Congressional District in 1962.  He was unseated in 1964 amidst the Democratic landslide of that year.  In 1966, he ran for Congress in the 4th Congressional District and won by almost eight points.  Congressman Snyder was reelected nine more times, compiling a distinguished record of service, before retiring in 1986. 

APPLICATION PROCEDURES:

The following items are required for each applicant. 

  • A completed application form

  • Finalists will be interviewed by the Deputy Chief of Staff. 

DEADLINES:

  • April 1, 2007 for Fall Semester (NKU)
  • November 1, 2007 for Spring Semester (TMC)

 HOUSING/MEALS/TRANSPORTATION:

A monthly stipend of $1,000 ($4,000 total) will be provided to the Congressional Fellow to assist with living costs.
