Agriculture

As a member of the full House Agriculture Committee and two of its subcommittees, I have taken a proactive stance on agricultural issues of critical importance to the rural community in the 28th District of Texas. I know the concerns that ranchers and farmers have about their livestock and crop maintenance, which is why I was active in crafting the 2007 Farm Bill. I included language in the 2007 Farm Bill to boost cattle fever tick eradication, expand broadband telemedicine and distance learning programs, develop an alternative energy program at TAMIU, and enhance the colonias access to federal programs.

I also have worked to ensure the presence of the United States Department of Agriculture in Starr County by working to keep the Rural Development Office open. I did not stop with the Farm Bill, and I have been actively pursuing ag interests.  I prevented the further closures of FSA offices in Zapata and La Salle Counties, and I have consistently worked to promote the interests of the agricultural community with the Department of Agriculture and other agencies.

I continue to work on behalf of ranchers and farmers in the 28th District in maintaining their labor forces. I support the Ag JOBS bill as this helps farmers get their crops to the market without facing a critical shortage in terms of labor. The continued support of the agricultural community is of great importance to me and the to the State of Texas as well. I am currently working to implement daily border-crossing provisions in legislation that would provide critical labor for farms and ranches within one hundred miles of the U.S.-Mexico border. I am honored to represent the agricultural community of the 28th District in the House of Representatives, and I ask you to please stay in touch with me as this legislative year continues.
