Foreign Affairs press release

(Washington, D.C.) – Congressman Joseph Crowley (D-Queens,Bronx) released the following statement in response to recent actions by the Indian Parliament to advance the stalled U.S.-India nuclear pact:

“I applaud Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for his leadership and successful efforts to secure a strong coalition to move the historic U.S.-India nuclear pact forward before the U.S. Congress goes out of session this year. Even though this pact was approved by U.S. Congress and signed into law by the U.S. President over a year and a half ago, approval by the Indian Parliament is required for this deal to move forward.

“It is my hope the Government of India will use this newfound momentum and move swiftly to allow sufficient time for the IEAE and NSG to clear the pact for final approval by the U.S. Congress. These recent developments give me hope that the pact may indeed reach Congress this year in time for a vote before the close of session.”

Congressman Crowley is a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the former chair of the Caucus on India and Indiamericans. Congressman Crowley is a key leader on South Asian affairs in the U.S. Congress; he helped broker the US-India nuclear pact under consideration today.
