Hoyer Discusses Importance of Andrews Air Force Base with Newly Established Andrews Business Alliance

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Friday, February 11, 2005

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, MD - Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-MD) today joined Senators Paul Sarbanes and Barbara Mikulski and the newly formed Andrews Air Force Base Business Alliance to discuss ways they can work together to enhance its importance to the community and economic impact on the region.

“I am pleased to see the business community taking such an active role to know and understand the needs of Andrews Air Force Base, particularly in such an urban area. This is key to improving opportunities for local businesses and also can also help to enhance the quality of life of those serving on the base.

“I believe that the community must share the responsibility of understanding and working with the base. Clearly Andrews has a very significant impact on the region and community leaders should know what problems Andrews confronts and how they can be helpful.

“I work very closely with the Navy Alliances in Southern Maryland and have been able to see first hand the importance of building a strong relationship between the local community and its leaders and the leadership of the local military installation. Knowing what the immediate and future needs are for an installation to continue performing its local mission is crucial for both the county and the base leadership. Forging a stronger partnership between the community and the base can open many new opportunities for the local private sector.

“I’ve known and have been on Andrews Air Force Base since I was 15 and first came to this region. This is a unique installation and I look forward to working with the Business Alliance as a federal partner to enhance the opportunities for both the business and base communities.”
