Congressman John Campbell is widely acknowledged as one of the leading fiscal conservative voices for lower taxes, lower spending, and more freedom. Campbell is not just keeping his Congressional seat warm; he is trying to change the debate in America. He is the author of the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights, which would completely reform the spending process in Washington, DC by limiting the annual growth in spending to the growth in the economy. He is also co-author of an innovative proposal called the Taxpayer Choice Act, which creates a new true flat tax as an optional alternative to the existing tax code while repealing the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT).
Congressman Campbell is also among the leaders in Congress taking on the issue of illegal immigration. As an active member of the Immigration Reform Caucus, Campbell has introduced numerous pieces of legislation to secure the borders, make English the national language, and punish “Sanctuary Cities”.
As a member of the House Financial Services Committee, Campbell has taken on a leadership role in addressing many of our country’s top issues including mortgage lending, corporate governance, banking reform, and insurance regulation.
Congressman Campbell also serves on the House Budget Committee where he helped create one of the most fiscally conservative budgets in decades and has taken an active role in crafting legislation to abolish some of the most unfair taxes on American families like the death tax, marriage tax, and capital gains tax. Additionally, Campbell was an outspoken supporter when the House passed legislative proposals to reform the congressional earmark process and create the Legislative Line Item Veto.
A proven leader in the fight against wasteful spending and earmarks, Congressman Campbell was selected in 2007 to serve as Chairman of the Budget and Spending Task Force of the Republican Study Committee (RSC). Campbell was the primary author and the first to sign the new Earmark Reform Pledge and is a founding member of the new Reagan21Caucus, a bicameral coalition of Senators and Representatives dedicated to a fresh bold vision centered on the ideals of Ronald Reagan to create a 21st century vision for the Republican Party.
Elected to Congress in a special election in December 2005, Campbell was overwhelmingly re-elected in 2006 garnering 60% of the vote. Congressman Campbell is a fourth generation Californian, who has lived in Irvine for nearly 30 years and brings with him to Washington a quarter century of experience in the business world and a record of accomplishment in both chambers of the California Legislature.
Campbell received a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from the University of California in Los Angeles and a Masters Degree in business taxation from the University of Southern California.
For nearly 25 years, Campbell worked in the automotive industry. He spent a majority of his career representing several automobile franchises, including Nissan, Mazda, Ford, Saturn, and Saab. Campbell is also a Certified Public Accountant who, prior to his automotive career, was a tax accountant with what is now Ernst & Young in Los Angeles.
Campbell was elected to the California Assembly in 2000 and the California Senate in 2004. While in the legislature he quickly earned a reputation as a leading voice for fiscal responsibility and worked to improve personal privacy protections.
Campbell continues a family tradition of public service and community involvement in California. His great-grandfather was elected to the California State Assembly in 1860 as part of Abraham Lincoln’s Republican ticket. John serves on numerous community boards, and is a member of Irvine Presbyterian Church where he is a member of the choir. John and his wife, Catherine, have been married for over 26 years and are the proud parents of two sons currently in college.
Congressman John Campbell represents California’s 48th Congressional District which encompasses Newport Beach, Irvine, Tustin, Lake Forest, Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills, Laguna Woods, Laguna Niguel, Aliso Viejo, Dana Point and parts of San Juan Capistrano and Santa Ana.
