Tour the Philadelphia and Denver Mints

Under authorization from Congress, by Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution, a national Mint was to be constructed in 1792.  The first United States Mint was built in Philadelphia – then, the nation’s capitol.  Since, the U.S. Department of Treasury has sanctioned four additional facilities: Philadelphia Mint, Pennsylvania, Denver Mint, Colorado, San Francisco Mint, California, West Point Mint, New York and the United States Bullion Depository, Fort Knox, Kentucky.

The primary responsibilities of the facilities are:
  • To distribute U.S. coins to the Federal Reserve banks and branches;
  • Maintain custody of the Nation’s $100 billion in U.S. gold and silver assests;
  • Producing proof and uncirculated coins and medals for the public to purchase;
  • Manufacture and sell platinum, gold and silver bullion coins; and
  • Receive, redeem and process mutilated coins.

Two of these facilities are open to public tours:
