Barrett Asks DOJ to investigate any criminal practices related to current Economic Crisis

Washington, DC - This morning Congressman Gresham Barrett (SC, 3), who serves on the House Committee on Financial Services, sent a letter to Attorney General Mukasey asking him to investigate any fraudulent behavior that may have contributed to the current economic crisis.

In the letter Barrett states, "As our nation continues to experience economic difficulties brought on at least partly by events in the subprime mortgage market, I would like to urge you to ensure that any acts of fraud that may have had a role in this crisis are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

Barrett goes on to say, "I ask you to carefully review past actions by individuals and financial institutions to determine whether they were unlawful. I believe firmly that current statutes must be fully enforced before any new rules are implemented by Congress or the regulatory agencies."

Gresham Barrett is expected back in Washington, DC on October 21st to participate in a hearing before the full Committee on Financial Services entitled “Regulatory Restructuring and Reform of the Financial System.”
