I rise in support of the Hunter amendment. Nine years ago Congress decided to build a 14 mile fence along the San Diego-Mexico border to curb drug trafficking and illegal immigration. As a result, the number of people caught crossing the border illegally along this area dropped by nearly 200,000 in 12 years.

This issue is so much more than facts and figures - it’s personal. It’s about my children: Madison, Jeb and Ross Barrett. It’s about my nieces and nephews like Hayden, and English, Jason, and Andrew. These are not just names - they are living breathing human beings. They are people I care about - they are people I love – it’s my family and their life began as an embryo.

I rise today in full support of H.R. 8 The Death Tax Repeal Permanency Act of 2005. The Death Tax defies common sense. This tax is fundamentally unfair. Prior to 2001, the top Death Tax rate was 55% - today the top rate is 47%. These are unbelievably high tax rates, especially when the tax is imposed on a lifetime of hard work.
