REP. MILLER STATEMENT ON RECESS APPOINTMENT

OF RICHARD STICKLER TO HEAD MSHA

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-CA), the senior Democrat on the House Education and the Workforce Committee, issued the following statement this evening on the recess appointment of Richard Stickler to head the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration:

“As an industry insider, Richard Stickler is the wrong man to head MSHA, and that’s why his nomination was twice rejected by the United States Senate. By taking advantage of the Congressional recess to appoint Stickler to this vitally important job, President Bush has shown profound disrespect for America’s miners and for the families of miners who have been killed on the job. President Bush should have worked with the mining community and with the Senate to produce a nominee acceptable to everyone, but he chose to force his own arrogant will instead. When Stickler’s temporary appointment expires, he can and should be replaced with someone who will make the safety and well-being of miners the top priority at MSHA.”
