As Representative of Georgia’s 5th Congressional District, I have strongly and consistently denounced the proliferation of nuclear and conventional weapons. The spread of such weapons violates the principles of non-violence and taints the hope of a peaceful and stable future for our children.
The proliferation of nuclear and conventional weapons is not a solution to the security dilemmas we face today. As Dr. Martin Luther King’s reminded us in his acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, we must not “accept the cynical notion that nation after nation must spiral down a militaristic stairway….” Instead, our response to the threats of terrorism and international conflicts should address the root causes of such acts of violence.
A stable, secure world at peace with itself is not built on an ever-shifting, uncontrollable foundation with the capacity to destroy itself. It is my strongest hope that someday our brothers and sisters from every nation will choose to lay down the weapons of war and pick up the tools of peace.
In my efforts to realize the goal of non-violence, I continue to support the following efforts to promote more peaceful and diplomatic relations with the international community:
-
Continuing to work cooperatively with other countries to prevent nuclear proliferation and facilitate nuclear disarmament
-
Pursuing unilateral initiatives to achieve nuclear arms reductions
-
Controlling the spread of chemical and biological weapons
-
Strengthening international institutions and respect for the rule of law
- Pursuing to the fullest extent nonviolent alternatives to war
Key non-proliferation legislations I have co-sponsored in the past:

-
