MILLER CALLS ON SUPREME COURT TO “DO THE RIGHT THING,” RULE PLEDGE CONSTITUTIONAL

Washington, D.C. (March 24, 2004) - Congressman Jeff Miller today called on the United States Supreme Court to do the right thing when it rules on the constitutionality of the Pledge of Allegiance. Congressman Miller attended arguments at the Supreme Court today of the appeal of the 9th Circuit Court decision ruling the Pledge was an unconstitutional infringement on the 1st Amendment.
“I was disappointed that the liberal 9th Circuit declared our Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional in 2002. The constitution guarantees the freedom of expression. It does not license the courts to prune the first amendment when something is not deemed ‘ideologically correct.’
“Since September 11th, the pledge has taken on a deeper meaning for many Americans. It is a reminder of the men and women who have died in the war on terror, and it is a reminder of the greatness of America,” Miller added.
“Something is inherently wrong in a society in which our founding principles are used not as a guarantor of personal liberties, but as a license to take them away. The court was wrong when it threw out the Pledge of Allegiance. The Supreme Court should correct their mistake and restore the liberty guaranteed to us by the First Amendment,” said Congressman Miller.
