Congressman George Miller (D-Martinez) lauded the passage of the Interior Appropriations bill by the House of Representatives today. H.R. 2643, the Department of the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2008, included funding for two projects in Miller’s district along with increased support for a number of other noteworthy national and local programs such as the Clean Water State Revolving Fund, the National Park Service, the state-side Land and Water Conservation Fund, and for Indian education.

“This bill reflects the priorities of the American people by emphasizing the importance and value of protecting our environment and maintaining our national parks,” said Miller.

Suisun Bay explanations requested

Miller, Tauscher, Feinstein, and Boxer request further explanations on possible environmental hazard

WASHINGTON -- Responding to reports that the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet may be affecting the environmental health of the San Francisco Bay, four California lawmakers are pressuring the Bush Administration for a plan to ensure that the ships are not releasing toxic materials into the Bay.

In a letter today to the federal Maritime Administration, which maintains the fleet and is responsible for its cleanup, Rep. George Miller (D-Martinez), Rep. Ellen Tauscher (D-Alamo) and U.S. Senators Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein asked for a briefing on the current state of the long-mothballed navy fleet and for an update on specific steps the Administration is taking.

REP. MILLER DENOUNCES BUSH OVER STEM CELL VETO

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman George Miller denounced President Bush today for vetoing a bi-partisan bill to expand stem cell research that Congress approved this spring.

“President Bush has once again dashed the hopes and dreams of millions of Americans looking to scientific advancements for possible cures for debilitating and deadly diseases,” said Miller (D-CA). “Congress passed the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act earlier this month with a strong bipartisan majority and I had hoped that the President would finally reconsider his opposition to help the millions of American’s suffering from Alzheimer’s, diabetes, cancer and other ailments. The vast majority of Californians and Americans across the country believe we should move forward in this field but the President refuses to listen to them or to the Congress. This latest veto is unacceptable and Congress will continue to fight for life-saving embryonic stem cell research.”
