Crime

As your Congressman, I have worked to reduce crime along the border region. The recent outbreak of violence in Nuevo Laredo has affected everyone who lives and works in the border region, and addressing this issue has been one of my top priorities as Congressman.  Since taking office, I have been working with the U.S. Attorney General, the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, the U.S. Department of State and the Mexican government to bring attention to the needs of the border law enforcement community.  We have already succeeded in creating a special Border Violence Task Force, which will help to coordinate the efforts of local, state, and federal law enforcement agents in the region.  In addition, I was able to pass an amendment to authorize the establishment of a National Gang Intelligence Center, which will help to fight the growing threat of violent gangs to our national security.  I am working with other Members of Congress to get their help to address this problem, and I will not rest until it is brought under control.

Additionally, I have helped pass laws that helped protect the safety of our children from sex offenders. In the last Congress, I joined with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle in passing H.R. 4472, the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act, which implements a national registry of sex offenders so that law enforcement officers and agencies can track these sex offenders. This law provides public access to sex offender information online, and increases penalties against sex offenders. I will continue working in the 110th Congress to protect our nation’s most vulnerable children in our communities.
