Whitfield Issues Statement on Presidents Proposal to Increase Troops in Iraq January 10, 2007 WASHINGTON U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield on Wednesday issued the following statement regarding President Bush's proposal to temporary increase the number of troops serving in Iraq.

"While I am primarily concerned with the safety and potential for additional casualties that may be caused with an increase in troop strength serving in Iraq, I respect the president's willingness to re-evaluate our strategy to win the War on Terror."

"I have great respect for the president's top commander in Iraq, Lt. Gen. David Petraeus, who I got to know during his tenure at Fort Campbell. I believe his experience as the commander of the 101st Airborne Division and his previous tours of duty in Iraq give him the expertise necessary to make credible recommendations."

"At this time, I am inclined to support the president's call for a temporary increase in troops serving in Iraq. I believe the additional troops will perform a significant role in supporting the Iraqi's efforts to stabilize their country. With this surge in U.S. troops, I do expect to see a noticeable increase in the level of Iraqi solider involvement. I also expect the president and Congress to vigilantly observe the effort by the Iraqi soldiers. If we do not see an increase in activity by the Iraqi military, as promised, then we must reconsider the commitment of the Iraqi leaders to stabilize their country and ultimately our commitment in respect to troop strength."

"If we increase the amount of troops serving in Iraq, I believe it is imperative to step up diplomatic relations with Syria and Iran to help end the sectarian violence and bring stability to the region."
