Fortenberry Supports Strengthening Pell Grants

for Higher Education

Washington D.C. - Congressman Jeff Fortenberry today voiced support for the House-passed Pell Grant Equity Act (HR 990), legislation to remove a federal rule that currently limits Pell Grant aid for college students. The rule, known as tuition sensitivity, reduces the annual maximum Pell Grant assistance for students who attend institutions of higher education with low tuition rates, such as community colleges or smaller state schools.

This measure helps distribute college assistance more evenly to those who need it most, regardless of where students may elect to go to school, Fortenberry said. It fixes a rule that in effect penalizes students who choose to attend lower-cost colleges and universities.
