Recent TSA statements suggest misinterpretation of 100% cargo screening mandate, raise doubts about meeting deadline for 100 percent cargo screening
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Representative Edward J. Markey (D-MA), a senior member of the Homeland Security Committee and author of the 100 percent air cargo screening mandate signed into law in August 2007, and Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX), chairwoman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Transportation Security and Infrastructure Protection, were joined by four other Members of Congress in raising concerns about the Bush administration’s erroneous interpretation of the law and delays in implementing the air cargo screening mandate.
Today the lawmakers sent a letter to Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Administrator Kip Hawley responding to TSA statements at two recent congressional hearings and reiterating that the air cargo screening mandate was intended to cover all cargo transported on passenger planes both within the United States and bound to the United States from overseas.
Product database championed by Markey included in final reform bill
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today the House of Representatives approved key consumer product safety reforms, including reforms championed by Representative Edward J. Markey (D-MA), primarily, establishing a national database of toy and other product warnings and risks. With the passage of H.R. 4040, the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, parents and consumers will now have access to “adverse incidents” reported to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Lawmakers Introduce Bill Requiring Administration to Use Realistic Gas Price Assumptions When Setting Fuel Economy Standards
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Representatives Edward J. Markey (D-MA) and Todd Russell Platts (R-PA) will today introduce a bill, the Accuracy in Fuel Economy Standards Act, requiring the Department of Transportation to use realistic and rational gas price assumptions as it calculates the maximum feasible fuel economy standards for the coming years as required by the energy bill passed by Congress last year. Using realistic gas price assumptions will ensure that fuel economy standards will reduce gas prices and our dangerous dependence on foreign oil as much as possible.

Representative Edward J. Markey (D-MA), a senior member of the House Homeland Security Committee, responded today to news that Boston and surrounding communities will receive a boost in homeland security funding through the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) and new Regional Catastrophic Preparedness Grant Program (RCPGP).
The programs are designed to help urban areas within the United States to help enhance their overall security and preparedness level so that they can prevent, respond and recover from acts of terrorism. Established in 2003, Boston’s UASI Region includes Boston, Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Quincy, Revere, Somerville, Brookline and Winthrop.

following statement on H.R. 6574, the United States-Russian Federation Nuclear
Cooperation Agreement Act of 2008, which passed the House Foreign Affairs
Committee today. The bill would give conditional congressional approval to the
U.S.-Russia nuclear agreement which the president sent to Congress in May.
