Homeland Security

As a Representative from New York, I understand first hand the need to protect our country from terrorist attacks. In Congress I have pushed for reforms that will increase funding to high-risk areas such as New York and Washington DC and provide better emergency communications. However, we must balance the need for security against our constitutional right to civil liberties. Both are important aspects of our great democracy, and we must not abuse our civil liberties in the name of security if the nation is to maintain its position as a world leader.

Some steps I have taken toward strengthening homeland security include advocating for American independence from foreign oil through alternative forms of energy as proposed in the DRIVE Act, as well as asking for the closure of the Indian Point nuclear facility which, due to its location near New York City and its suburbs, is itself a national security threat.
