Energy and the Environment

In order to protect our nation and our environment, it is essential we wean our economy off oil and develop a domestic economy revolving around clean alternative fuels. Our country has become increasingly dependent on oil imports from unstable regimes, which in many cases, deny their citizens basic democratic freedoms. In addition, there is now an irrefutable scientific consensus that global warming is real, it is dangerous and it is caused by greenhouse gas emissions. That is why I introduced H.R. 670, the DRIVE Act, which will require the U.S. to cut oil consumption by 2.5 million barrels of oil per day by 2015 and 5 million barrels per day by 2025. This goal will be met by helping U.S. automakers make more efficient vehicles, by providing incentives for alternative fuels such as cellulosic ethanol and by transforming our fuel infrastructure to accommodate alternative fuels.
