English as the Official Language

I feel that it is unnecessary to enact federal legislation making English the official language of the United States because it would impede the successful assimilation into American society of new immigrants. I am also very concerned about the impact it would have on the electoral process. As we saw in Florida in the 2000 election, many eligible citizens were unable to vote because of inadequate assistance for non-English speaking voters. Clearly, establishing English as the official language would only exacerbate this problem, and therefore is not a desirable solution.
