Elections

Voter confidence in elections has been, unfortunately, called into question in recent years as a result of the events of the 2000 Presidential election and subsequent incidents. To combat this worrisome problem I am a cosponsor of the Voter Confidence and Increased Accessibility Act (H.R. 811), which requires verifiable printed paper copies of electronic ballots and extends protections for disabled voters who have repeatedly been prevented from voting because of physical barriers and inadequate training by polling place workers. Remedies for the twin threats of worn out outdated voting equipment (remember punch cards and ‘hanging chads’?) and computer-based voting systems susceptible to tampering remain very important to me, for fair and reliable elections are a foundation of our great democracy.
