CASTLE, SPELLINGS HOLD TELEPHONE TOWNHALL MEETING -- May 7, 2008 PDF Print
Delawareans Participated in Education Conversation

Washington, D.C. -- Wednesday evening, Delaware Congressman Michael Castle was joined by special guest United States Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings for a telephone town hall meeting focused on education.  Delawareans across the state were randomly selected to participate in the call, including representatives from the Delaware Department of Education, state superintendents, Delaware lawmakers on the State House and Senate Education Committees, and the Delaware State Education Association (DSEA).

Since serving as Delaware's Governor, Rep. Castle has been a strong advocate for providing children access to quality education.  Currently, Rep. Castle serves as the most Senior Republican on the House Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education - the Committee which oversees a number of important education measures including No Child Left Behind (NCLB).  In addition to discussing NCLB, Rep. Castle and Sec. Spellings took questions from Delawareans related to higher education, including the issue of college costs, and basic funding needs for K-12 education.

"Secretary Spelling and I agree that we can continue to make progress on education with a bipartisan effort to ensure we are improving the quality of education for our nation's children," Rep. Castle said.  "Real progress has been made under NCLB by establishing a standard by which we can measure educational gains nationwide.  The law is in need of review, and I believe there are several updates and reforms that are overdue.  In addition to NCLB, Congress should be looking to at ways to reduce college costs which are rising at dramatic rates.
