Becoming a U.S. House of Representatives Page

dsc01497_page2forweb

I encourage all high school juniors to consider and pursue becoming a page in the House of Representatives.  Pages will have an unforgettable experience that will allow them to live, work, and study in Washington D.C.  It is a great opportunity to gain work experience on Capitol Hill while receiving rigorous academic training.

Page applicants must be juniors in high school and at least 16 years of age.  Prospective pages can apply for the fall or spring appointments, but must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher in core subjects.  There is no GPA requirement for those who are accepted into the program during the summer session.

During the academic year, pages must attend the Page School and also perform the tasks as support staff to the Members of the House of Representatives.  Page School is a fully accredited institution through the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools based on a year-long curriculum.  The Page School curriculum is eligible for academic credit at your high school.

Pages are given a monthly stipend to compensate for their accommodations and live in the Page Residence Hall, located only a few blocks away from The Library of Congress and the Capitol.  The Residence Hall is a well supervised coeducational learning environment, and security is provided by the U.S. Capitol Police.

Pages provide a vital contribution to the daily processes of the House of Representatives.  Pages must be prepared to handle many specific duties and work well as a team.  To perform these duties, pages must be able to walk considerable distances everyday, carry packages up to 25 pounds, and speak fluent English.

I challenge those who are interested to further explore this prestigious opportunity.  However, only a limited number of page positions allotted each year for this highly selective program.  To learn more about the possibility of becoming a page, please contact my office or the office of any other Member of Congress.  All pages must be sponsored by a Member of Congress of their state who can initiate the application process.

A parental consent form, official transcript of high school grades for academic year applicants, written essay, resume of extracurricular activities, and letters of recommendation will be necessary if I or another Member of Congress agree to serve as your sponsor.  For further information and requirements, please visit this link: http://pageprogram.house.gov/experience.html
