Central Michigan University and Eastern Michigan University Endorse Knollenberg's Math and Science Scholarships

2nd Grade

Farmington Hills, MI, May 31, 2007 -

Congressman Joe Knollenberg’s legislation to provide a $5,000 annual scholarship to high school students who graduate with 3.5 grade point average or higher and major in math, science, engineering, or health care in college has been endorsed by Central Michigan University (CMU) and Eastern Michigan University (EMU).

“I am honored that my math and science scholarship bill has the support of CMU and EMU. These are two great Michigan colleges that are working hard to equip our young people with the skills they need to compete in a global economy,” Knollenberg said. “Math and science are the building blocks of the new Michigan economy. We simply have to do a better job in America of educating our kids in these academic disciplines.”

Knollenberg’s math and science scholarship is designed to encourage our best and brightest minds to enter the math and sciences in hopes of nurturing innovators who will drive our economy forward. The scholarship is named in honor of famed automotive pioneer Henry Ford.

“As the leader of Eastern Michigan University, I can readily attest to the need for scholarship support for students who pursue scientific, technical and health-related disciplines,” John Fallon, the president of EMU, said. “Our international competitiveness is threatened like never before in history. What is at stake, over time, is our very way of life. As a society, we simply must do more and better.”

“This scholarship encourages and enables more Michigan students to take part in higher education, especially in technology and science fields poised to launch the state’s workforce into the global marketplace of the future. It is an outstanding program that will help many students earn financial aid for college,” said Michael Rao, the president of CMU.

In addition to promoting the Henry Ford scholarship for math and science, Congressman Knollenberg voted earlier this year for a bipartisan bill to cut the student loan rate in half. The bill passed the House of Representatives with strong support and awaits action in the United States Senate.
