Gas Prices - Energy Independence

Ginny is just as frustrated as you are about the rapid increase in gas prices the country is experiencing.  As she travels throughout the eight counties that encompass the 5th District, she hears from dozens of constituents every day about how painful it is to fill up a gas tank even once a week.

That is why Ginny has a long record of supporting measures to help achieve energy independence and help lower the price at the pump.  These measures include; drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), drilling in the Gulf Coast waters, removing the tariff on imported ethanol, increased research into hydrogen fuel, studying the feasibility of using biomass as an energy source, clean coal technologies, the construction and expedited permitting of new refineries, and supporting nuclear power.

In our search for long-term solutions we cannot simply ignore the short-term damage the high cost of gas is doing to our economy.  America must adopt an energy policy that allows for more drilling within the United States to bridge the gap until alternative fuels become practical.  In fact, the US Geological Survey estimates there could be almost 16 billion barrels of recoverable oil available within the United States - this would be enough oil to offset all Saudi imports for the next 30 years.

The 1.5 million acre area of ANWR is considered America’s largest untapped oil field and could be one of the largest oil fields discovered in the world.  In 1995 the Republican controlled Congress voted to allow energy exploration in ANWR.  Unfortunately, President Clinton vetoed this legislation and prevented the United States from securing a more independent energy future.  Americans would be in a much better position today had President Clinton allowed this exploration back in 1995.

Prior to the Democratic takeover, Ginny worked to pass legislation to provide tax incentives that encourage the research, production, and deployment of alternative sources of fuel, in addition to measures that created additional domestic oil supplies.  Since Democrats took of both houses of Congress, however, there have been no meaningful actions taken to expand production or lower gas prices.  Even with this inaction from Democratic leaders, Ginny will continue to fight for commonsense measures that reduce the price of gasoline and relieve the pressure on your family income.
