Scott s job fair expected to draw 6,000

Thirteenth Congressional District Congressman David Scott, D-Ga., is hoping to break a few records Friday and it has nothing to do with his voting record.

Congressman David Scott's Third Annual 13th Congressional District Job Fair is scheduled Friday at the Georgia International Convention Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with more than 200 employers expected. The event has become so large, according to Chandra Harris, Scott's press secretary, the event now requires two full GICC exhibit halls just to handle the employers and applicants.

Last year, more than 6,000 job seekers jammed the GICC for the job fair. Early indications this year reveal that number could well surpass last year as job seekers are expected from throughout metro Atlanta.

Scott said the event will assemble many of Georgia's top employers from the public and private sector.

"I am proud to host my Third Annual 13th Congressional District Job Fair, which is a growing event that has already had a significant impact on the community," he said. "Last year, over 1,000 job seekers found employment by taking part in the job fair and we were able to assist many willing and able workers in making direct contact with area businesses which are growing and looking to hire."

James MacDougal, who recently moved to Jonesboro and is looking for work, said he plans to attend the job fair which he heard about from relatives.

"It certainly saves on gas to have all these companies in one place at one time so you can walk from one table to another and not have to drive from one employment office to another and then usually wait a long time just to see someone," he said.

According to Ms. Harris, applicants are asked to dress professionally for the job fair and have plenty of resumes on hand and ready to give out.

Among the area employers expected to have representatives at the job fair are Aflac, UPS, Delta, Lockheed-Martin, the Cobb County School District, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport's Department of Aviation, St. Joseph Hospital, SunTrust Bank and the Douglas County Government.

Ms. Harris said organizing the job fair is a year-round effort "and allows growing and expanding companies in and around the congressman's district to meet prospective employees in a time and place convenient to the employer and applicant."

Last year, Comcast, FedEx and Aramak Foods each hired more than 50 people as a result of the job fair, Ms. Harris said.

"We are inviting any one who is looking for a job to take part as we are anxious to match qualified job seekers with companies anxious to hire," she added.
