Pennsylvania Passes Conservation Elk Tag Legislation

HARRISBURG, PA - Legislation allowing conservation organizaitons to auction off elk licenses to generate funds for the state GameElk Tag Legislation Commission has passed the Pennsylvia General Assembly and is now waiting the expected signature of Governor Rendell.

Authored and introduced by Pennsylvania State Sportsmen's Caucus Co-Chair, state Rep. Marc Gergely and supported by the Pennsylvania Sportsmen's Caucus, the legislation (H.B. 747) will allow the Pennsylvania Game Commission to offer a special elk conservation hunting tag through an auction every year in which the proceeds would go toward improving elk habitats in the Commonwealth.

Presidential Amendment Ensures Recreational Fishing to Be Maintained on Federal Lands and Waters

President George W. Bush has signed an amendment to the 1995 Executive Order on recreational fishing that ensures that federal agencies maintain recreational fishing on federal lands and waters, including marine protected areas.

"The Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation has been concerned that the spawn of Marine Protected Areas (MPA) will include no fishing provisions, thereby locking recreational anglers out of miles of prime fishing areas. This is a major victory for sportsmen and we commend the President for this initiative," delcared Jeff Crane, president of CSF.

The Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation (CSF) recently convened the largest inside the beltway gathering of conservation WHC Briefingorganizations, outdoor industry, state fish and wildlife agencies, federal agency heads and members of the Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus to discuss policy initiatives that will shape the future of hunting and wildlife conservation in the 21st century.

Underlying that acknowledgement was the realization that bi-partisanship would be the lifeline that will breed conservation success into the next century.
