WASHINGTON - Congressman Adam H. Putnam (FL-12) today joined Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman and Florida Governor Jeb Bush to announce a $500 million agricultural relief package to aid Florida’s farmers in the aftermath of the devastation caused by the recent Florida hurricanes.
“These U.S. Department of Agriculture funds will be used to aid the recovery efforts from recent hurricanes and will go a long way toward rebuilding the agricultural industry so vital to Florida’s economy,” said Putnam.
“I am deeply grateful to President George Bush for his commitment to Florida agriculture throughout this period of great hardship, and to Appropriations Chairman Bill Young for his tireless efforts on behalf of our State in this process,” Putnam stated. “The President has remained steadfast in his support and pledge to help Florida farmers recover from these devastating hurricanes, and by directing these funds through existing accounts, those needing assistance will receive it in the quickest possible manner.”
“The aftermath of Hurricanes Charley and Frances left the heart of the Florida’s agricultural region in shambles as it wrecked havoc upon citrus, nursery and vegetable operations,” Putnam said. “Today’s agricultural relief package is a welcome announcement to those who have suffered so much.”
“I look forward to continue working with the President, Governor Bush and all our federal partners to assess the damage caused by Hurricane Ivan and ensure the same swift response for other agricultural sectors that have been impacted by these horrific storms,” concluded Putnam.
