Education
Our children deserve the highest quality education. As a former member of the Midland Independent School District Board of Trustees, I am committed to improving our schools.
This year marks the sixth anniversary of No Child Left Behind (NCLB). While I am a strong supporter of the foundation of the law, I believe that we can do a better job of its implementation. Achieving benchmarks for students is a necessary and important feature of NCLB; however, I believe that our school systems should be given more flexibility to work to ensure that the goals we set for all of our students are met. I am a strong supporter of educational standards and rewarding those who meet those standards. However, not all children are the same and I believe we must provide some alternative ways to test children with special needs so we will truly have a system in which no child is left behind.
The education of our children is based on decisions made on multiple levels: the Federal level; the state level; and the local level. I believe that the most important decision making should remain at the local level. To that end, the federal government must give more freedom to the states, schools systems, and parents, so that they can find the best methods to meet the standards set forth in NCLB.
Congress will soon reauthorize NCLB, and I will work to see that schools and parents have more responsibility and flexibility to ensure the best education for their children. NCLB is a landmark education program. I believe with the proper oversight, it will continue to aid even more students to meet their educational goals future decades.
This year, I mailed a questionnaire to the superintendents located in the 11th district of Texas. I requested that they share their opinions with me on a variety of issues regarding the implementation of NCLB and offer their suggestions for methods to improve the application of the law. I was pleased to receive several responses to this survey and forwarded a summary to Chairman George Miller and Senior Republican Member Howard “Buck” McKeon with the Committee on Education and Labor.
