BISHOP STATEMENT ON H.R. 2206

Hon. Tim Bishop

HR 2206
May 24, 2007

After four years of war, after 3,500 brave troops sacrificed, after tens of thousands more injured, and after $600 billion spent, the American people deserve a change of course in Iraq. Still, the President prefers to stay the course indefinitely —at the expense of our brave troops and $3.2 billion more spent each week—with no questions asked.

I have always voted to keep our troops well-armed and supplied throughout our fight against terrorists in Afghanistan and elsewhere. I have voted to continue operations in Iraq with strategic benchmarks and oversight. And I have consistently voted to raise the standard of medical care for our active duty personnel and veterans.

But today I draw a line. I stand for the majority of Americans and the majority of those in my district to say that giving the President another blank check to recklessly continue pursuing a failed policy is unconscionable. It will only extend this nation’s greatest foreign policy disaster.

That is why I cannot support HR 2206.
