Rep. Calvert: Bi-Partisan Cooperation is Needed to Help Our Economy
Rebecca Rudman

Dear Friends,

The news about the economy has been hard to avoid: unemployment is up slightly, holiday sales were down, and the housing market continues to struggle.  In order to stave off an economic slump, it is vital that Congress take measured action to boost business and alleviate the rising costs on families.

Republicans and Democrats alike understand that we must tread carefully right now.  The absolute worst thing we could do is raise taxes – either by a stand alone tax increase bill or by allowing the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts to lapse.  American families are experiencing less buying power because of increased energy costs, healthcare expenses, and gas prices.  The crunch on family budgets means less consumption in the economy and less ability to save for the future.  Increasing that burden by more taxation would be a disaster for American families and for our economy.

There is little argument that our economy will experience sluggish growth however Congress must act within its power to promote growth and limit the length of time that our economy struggles.  As in the past, our economy runs in cycles.  After a tremendous amount of growth and prosperity, the correction we are experiencing now was likely to occur, but it too will pass.  I understand many of you are concerned about the state of your households and budgets.  I share your concern about the economy and will work with my colleagues to ease your burden.

I welcome your input as I understand this is an issue that is important to the constituents of the 44th Congressional District of California.

Sincerely,

KEN CALVERT

Member of Congress
