Washington, Sep 15 -

More than $5 million in federal funding will move the FedEx project at Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTI) closer to completion, U.S. Rep. Howard Coble (R-NC) announced today.  Congressman Coble said that two agencies of the U.S. Department of Transportation will provide $5,625,225 for costs associated with construction of the FedEx cargo hub at the airport.

Rep. Coble said the Federal Transit Administration will provide PTI with $4,470,000 for extension of Taxiway D that serves regular air traffic.  With the pending opening of the FedEx cargo hub, federal officials urged PTI to extend this taxiway.  These funds, Rep. Coble noted, will be used for phase one of the construction project.

Congressman Coble also announced the Federal Aviation Administration will provide PTI with $1,155,225 for costs directly associated with construction of the FedEx cargo hub.  The money will be used for construction of the new runway, associated taxiways and for land acquisition.  These funds will increase the federal support from $10,371,747 to $11,526,972 in this fiscal year and is the seventh federal payment since 2002.

“We hope that this FedEx project will be an engine that powers our region’s economy into the foreseeable future,” Rep. Coble noted.  “Our office has worked closely with PTI officials to ensure that federal support for this important project remains strong.”

PTI officials say that the FedEx cargo hub project is on schedule for a mid-summer opening in 2009.
