Service Academy Nominations

Each year, Members of the United States Congress are asked to submit military academy nominations. This is to ensure that a wide range of students from across the nation attend the Academies. Each Member is permitted to nominate 10 outstanding individuals from his or her district for each academy.

Without a doubt, the military academies are some of the finest schools in the United States. Not only do they teach academics, but instill discipline, commitment and leadership in the young Americans who attend.

Competition is very keen, therefore it is wise for applicants to apply through all nominating authorities (U.S. Representatives, U.S. Senators, the Vice President and the President) for which they are eligible and for all Academies in which they have a real interest. An individual may be nominated by more than one nominating authority and/or to more than one Academy.

Congresswoman Drake's Service Academy Advisory Group will recommend candidates for nomination to her. The Advisory Group will look for well-rounded candidates; therefore academic qualifications, test scores and leadership abilities are all weighed. Candidates must be at least 17 years old, but not have passed the 23rd birthday; must be a United States citizen; and, must be unmarried, not pregnant, and have no legal obligation to support children or other dependants.

The Second Congressional District application process begins June 1st for the year in which the candidate is either a senior in high school or a freshman in college. The candidate needs to maintain close contact with his/her guidance counselor to ensure completeness of the package.

Candidates are required to compile their application information and submit only a completed Request for Nomination package. It is recommended that the Request for Nomination application package be in Congresswoman Drake's district office between late September and mid-October. If a candidate wishes to receive notification of receipt of his/her Request for Nomination Application package, ensure that a return email address is included. If candidates have questions about the local process, they are encouraged to contact the Academy Coordinator personally by email (preferably), phone or mail. The deadline for submission is close of business, October 31. It is incumbent on the applicant to pre-register with each Academy of choice indicated on the application. Candidates who are not pre-registered with their chosen academy (ies) will not be considered. After a congressional nomination is made, it’s then up to the individual academies to make their final decision. When that decision comes and you have succeeded in receiving an appointment – the real test begins. You will report in the summer prior to your freshman year to begin a basic training program before you begin an intense and gratifying four-year education.
