Congressman Hinojosa is committed to increasing the access to quality health care in our nation, and especially in Texas. For many diseases like diabetes and kidney disease, organ donation can be the only option. Yet many donors are unwilling to give because of the financial burden it can place on their families. To help with this problem, Hinojosa introduced HR 2808, the Living Organ Donor Job Security Act. This bill amends the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA) to entitle employees covered by FMLA to leave to provide a living organ donation, including for time spent for: (1) tests to determine medical suitability of the employee for donation; (2) physical, psychological, and social evaluations of the donor; (3) pre-transplant outpatient services; (4) postoperative inpatient and outpatient transplantation services; (5) travel in connection with such tests, evaluations, and services; and (6) recuperation. Giving the gift of life to someone should not jeopardize your own financial security.
Since coming to Congress in 1997, Hinojosa has brought millions of dollars in federal funding to the 15th Congressional District to build new health facilities, expand existing ones and support programs that keep Texans healthy. His assistance has been key in projects such as the recently opened Driscoll Children’s Specialty Center in McAllen, the Vannie Cook Pediatric Cancer Clinic, Nuestra Clinica del Valle, and the Shepherd’s Community Health Center in Beeville. He has fought for Veterans to have access surgical care in the Rio Grande Valley hospitals instead of having to travel 250 miles to San Antonio.
Congressman Hinojosa has championed legislation that will improve the health care system for all Americans. He is a member of the Congressional Rural Health Caucus because he understands that rural communities face unique challenges in attracting health professionals and in developing quality facilities.
Hinojosa actively supports the effort to create new formulas for Medicare reimbursement to physicians and rural hospitals. Additionally, Congressman Hinojosa fights every year for increased medical research funding at the National Institutes of Health to address health epidemics such as diabetes and stroke, and to cure cancer.
