Washington, Sep 16 -

Airports in Alamance, Guilford and Moore counties will receive funding to make them safer and more efficient, U.S. Rep. Howard Coble (R-NC) announced today.  Congressman Coble, a member of the House Aviation subcommittee, said that the U.S. Department of Transportation will provide more than $8 million for construction projects at three 6th District airports.

Rep. Coble said the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will provide $5 million for extension of the runway at Burlington-Alamance Regional Airport.  The runway, which will increase from 5,000 to 6,400 feet when completed, will connect the airport to the new Honda Aero facility.  Airport officials hope to award a construction contract on Wednesday to extend the runway over the Gunn Creek tributary.  The runway extension should be completed sometime in 2010.

The Moore County Airport will receive $1,087,104 from the FAA, Congressman Coble also announced today.  Rep. Coble said the Moore County Airport will use the federal funds for land acquisition, easement acquisition, along with obstruction removal.

Rep. Coble, who announced on Tuesday that Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTI) would receive $4,470,000 for extension of Taxiway D, said today that the FAA has increased the grant total by another $2 million, bringing the total federal involvement to this project to $6,470,000.  PTI officials said the FAA urged the extension of Taxiway D that serves regular air traffic and is needed to allow for efficient operations associated with the new runway currently being built for the FedEx cargo hub project.

“Our airports are critical components of the economy throughout the 6th District,” Rep. Coble stated.  “As a member of the Aviation subcommittee, our office works closely with local airport officials to provide them with support from Washington.”

Dan Danieley, executive director of the Burlington-Alamance Regional Airport, appreciates that close working relationship.  “Congressman Coble and his staff have been diligent in working with us,” Mr. Danieley noted, “and we are grateful for that strong support.”
