The Sixth District of North Carolina

Welcome to the Sixth District –located in the heartland of North Carolina and comprising a large portion of the Piedmont Triad. We like to think of the Sixth District as the “Congressional District of Capitals.” We are home to the Furniture Capital of the World (High Point), the Golf Capital of the World (Pinehurst), the Chair Capital of the World (Thomasville), the Hosiery Capital of the World (Burlington), the Pottery Capital of the World (Seagrove), and we even represent a portion of the Barbeque Capital of the World (Lexington). The Sixth District is comprised of all of Moore and Randolph counties and portions of Alamance, Davidson, Guilford, and Rowan counties. The traditional, bread-and-butter industries of textiles, tobacco and furniture can still be found throughout the Sixth District. While these industries are in transition and facing uncertain futures, the Sixth District’s economy is broad and diverse. Let’s begin with furniture – the Sixth District is as well known for this industry as any. Twice a year, in April and October, 70,000 buyers from all corners of the world converge on High Point to attend the International Home Furnishings Market to see the latest in furniture designs and trends. When you mention High Point to anybody in the world, they immediately know you are talking about furniture – the names are synonymous. Thomasville, in nearby Davidson County, is known as the Chair City because it is the home of Thomasville Furniture and a giant Chippendale-style chair that adorns the town square. Not to be outdone, High Point boasts of several giant pieces of furniture sprinkled throughout the city. Greensboro, the largest city in the Sixth District, is the home of collegiate athletics, insurance, tobacco, trucking, denim wear, and other diverse industries. The Atlantic Coast Conference – the premier collegiate athletic conference – is headquartered in the Gate City. Lincoln Financial, which purchased Jefferson Pilot – which was founded in Greensboro – is a major employer in Greensboro. Lorillard Tobacco – the maker of Newport, Kent, True, and Old Gold cigarettes – is headquartered in Greensboro and employs close to two thousand people. Volvo Trucks – when looking for a North American headquarters – decided that Greensboro was the perfect place. Even Wrangler Jeans manufacturer VF Corporation has located its main office in Greensboro. In addition to being home to many prestigious companies, Greensboro provides a rich cultural experience for the region. It is the home of an outstanding symphony, a nationally-recognized music school, the Eastern Music Festival, and many fine museums and art galleries.   NewBridge Bank Park, located downtown, is the home of the Greensboro Grasshoppers and one of the best minor league parks in the country. Travel a little south and you will reach Randolph County – the home of Seagrove, world-famous for its collection of outstanding pottery craftsmen, and the North Carolina Zoological Park – one of the finest all natural zoos in the world. Randolph County also is home to many current and former drivers on the NASCAR circuit, including “The King” Richard Petty who has an outstanding racing museum in Randleman. Continue heading south and you will reach Moore County, where Pinehurst is located. The U.S. Open found Pinehurst No.2 to be the perfect course for its 1999 and 2005 championships. People travel from all over the world to play the many courses that dot the Sandhills landscape. Also, every year, Greensboro is home for a stop on the PGA Tour, the Wyndham Championship. The Sixth District is home to many of the textile and hosiery plants that have employed generations of citizens. Many of these facilities are located in Alamance County and thousands of people travel from near and far to visit the many factory outlet stores located there. We claim that the best barbeque found in North Carolina – or anywhere in the world for that matter – is found in the Sixth District. Lexington-style barbeque is found in restaurants throughout the district and Davidson County hosts an annual Barbeque Festival that attracts upwards of 100,000 pork lovers from all over the nation. Of course, we are biased, but we think the Sixth District contains the best of all that North Carolina has to offer. From our central location, you can reach the Tar Heel state’s beautiful mountains or beaches with relative ease. Our area boasts a rich blend of the old and new, the history of our state and nation, and the promise of tomorrow. You can go from visiting the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park – where a pivotal battle of the Revolutionary War was fought – to observing scientists at RF Micro Devices who are working on the latest high-tech research. Our diverse economy and population make living in the Piedmont Triad truly a unique experience. If you want to visit the Sixth District, we are ready to welcome you with open arms. If you already live here, you already know this, but it is worth repeating – the Sixth District is the best place to live, work and play in North Carolina. Welcome!
