North Carolina is fortunate to have an organization called the Small Business Technology Development Center (SBTDC). The organization is a partnership between the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and the University of North Carolina system to promote the formation and growth of small businesses in North Carolina. It offers a wealth of information and services for small businesses and people interested in starting a business. The internet address for SBTDC is www.sbtdc.org. Opportunities 2006

Opportunities 2006 is a regional biennial "reverse" trade show that allows small businesses the opportunity to meet contracting officers from over 60 federal, state, and local government agencies and prime contractors. The conference location in Asheville, NC makes it easy for small businesses in western North Carolina and all of upstate South Carolina to attend. This conference is designed to help your business keep in step and poised to take advantage of the business opportunities that are open to you from the "largest purchaser of goods and services in the world."

As a small business person at Opportunities2006, you can:

-Market your products and services directly to over 50 federal, state, and local government agencies and large prime contractors in ONE day with ONE sales call.

-Attend series of seminars designed to provide the latest information on doing business with the government.

-Place bids on goods and services and win a contract on the spot. Representatives from several agencies and prime contractors will bring simplified acquisition requirements and ask small businesses to submit quotes. Contracts will be awarded during the On-the-Spot Awards reception.

Future Forward

Future Forward is a regional economic development initiative aimed at creating a comprehensive economic development strategy for twelve counties in the Western Piedmont and Mountains of North Carolina located in the 10th and 11th Congressional Districts.

  • The plan initially received funding support from the U.S. Economic Development Administration and the North Carolina Department of Commerce.
  • Former Congressman Cass Ballenger appointed a 21-member leadership group to oversee the Future Forward strategy development process.
  • The Western Piedmont Council of Governments manages the federal and state grant funds for the project.
  • The plan identifies a set of key strategies and action items that brings the region together and provides a wish list of key economic development projects for federal, state, local, and private investment.
