Washington, Aug 4, 2006 -  More than three million dollars is on its way to the 6th District for several public transit projects according to the congressman who secured the funds, U.S. Rep. Howard Coble (R-NC). Congressman Coble said federal grants will be used for transit projects throughout the district, including Elon University and for a new transportation proposal.

Coble, a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure committee, said that one grant is for $2.164 million and the second is for $990,000. He said that both grants are going to the Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation (PART). “Our office is committed to securing funds to enhance all forms of transportation throughout the 6th District,” Rep. Coble said, “and that, of course, includes public transit. I am excited how these federal dollars will support several worthy projects and will also foster a study of an exciting new proposal to serve our region.”

More than $200,00 of the $2.1 million grant will be used to get Elon University’s new bus shuttle system up and running according to Rep. Coble. These funds will be used to purchase new buses and develop a bio-diesel fueling station. “Traffic around the Elon campus has become a real detriment to the school,” Rep. Coble added. “This new bus system will greatly enhance the flow of traffic around campus and around the town of Elon.” School and PART officials hope to have the system ready to go for the fall semester. The remainder of the $2.1 million grant will be used to purchase new buses, construct new shelters and upgrade other PART operations.

Rep. Coble said the $990,000 grant will fund a PART study of an alternative transportation system that could possibly run from Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem to North Carolina A&T State University. All forms of transportation will be studied thanks to this federal grant, Coble noted. This new transit proposal could serve major stops such as the Piedmont Triad International Airport, the Greensboro Coliseum and several colleges. Rep. Coble said that this grant will be used to study the feasibility of such a new transit corridor.
