Dingell on Journal of American Medical Association Editorial on Bisphenol A
Washington, D.C. – Rep. John D. Dingell (D-MI), the Chairman of the Committee on Energy and Commerce, issued the following statement regarding a Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) editorial on Bisphenol A:
“The editorial in JAMA and the epidemiologic study discussed in the editorial add to the growing body of scientific literature and research that raises concerns about the safety of Bisphenol A and, particularly, the effects this chemical may have on infants and fetuses.
“To date, the Food and Drug Administration, has ignored the totality of research available to it and instead focused myopically on industry-funded research.
“One would hope that the FDA will take careful notice of this new research during its Science Board meeting on Bisphenol A. The Committee will be watching carefully to determine whether that meeting is a legitimate and open discussion based on all of the available science, or a continuation of FDA’s pattern of refusing to take into account the totality of publicly available scientific research on Bisphenol A.”
