Third Annual M&S Capitol Hill Expo to be Held July 15, 2008

Modeling & Simulation Caucus Co-chairs, Congressman J. Randy Forbes (VA-04) and Congressman Solomon Ortiz (TX-27) announced today that the Congressional Modeling and Simulation (M&S) Caucus is joining in hosting the Third Annual M&S Capitol Hill Exhibition in conjunction with the event sponsor, the National Training and Simulation Association.  The expo is the premier M&S event in the nation’s capital bringing exhibitors from a myriad of industries to showcase M&S applications to Capitol Hill leaders in an effort to promote the development of this high-tech tool in a growing number of fields and specialties. Bill to Enhance the Study of Modeling and Simulation

Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) has introduced H.R. 4165, a bill that would provide grants to encourage and enhance the study of modeling and simulation at institutions of higher education. Currently, a limited number of institutions of higher education have Modeling and Simulation programs, including undergraduate and graduate degree programs. This competitive grant program will provide a critical source of funding for colleges and universities that want to expand and improve their Modeling and Simulation programs. The grant will also provide important seed money for colleges and universities that do not have a program to establish a Modeling and Simulation program. Members of the M&S Caucus who have co-sponsored this legislation are Chairman Rep. Randy Forbes (VA-04), co-Chairman Rep. Solomon Ortiz (TX-27), Rep. Thelma Drake (VA-02), Rep. Tom Feeney (FL-24), and Rep. Ric Keller (FL-08).


What is modeling and simulation?
CIt's your child's video game - simulation uses combinations of sound, sight, and motion to make you feel you are experiencing an actulal event. Modeling involves the complex computer models used to create these artificial environments. America's military uses simulators to train personnel from flying aircraft to detection of improvised explosive devices.

How does M&S impact national defense and industries?
From doctors performing hands-on simulated surgeries, to homeland security models that account for details such as wind direction and construction sites, to transportation models that show projected traffic patterns in your hometown decades into the future, modeling and simulation is on the verge of breaking out of the defense industry and into the everday lives of Americans.
