Majority Whip James Clyburn joined Rep. Kendrick Meek (D-FL), a Member of the House Armed Services Committee, and Army General William E. (Kip) Ward, Commander of U.S. Africa Command on October 18, 2007, to discuss minority and female representation in commanding ranks of the United States armed services. Majority Whip James Clyburn and Rep. Meek support the Congressional Black Caucus pursuit to close the gap in the lack of diversity in military leadership and commanding posts.

The CBC and Armed services will look at bettering recruitment and mentoring to ensure our talented, young minority and female officers have every opportunity to attain our military's highest ranks.

Clyburn joined Democratic Leadership, doctors from the American Academy of Pediatrics, and nurses from the American Nurses Association on Tuesday, October 2, 2007 to urge the president to sign the Children?s Health Insurance Plan (CHIP) that will insure health care for 10 million children.

Al Wynn hosted the discussion joined by panel participants State Rep. Harold Mitchell (D-SC), Dr. Sabra C. Slaughter of Medical University of South Carolina, Dr. Judith Salley of South Carolina State University?s Department of Biological Sciences, Theodore M. Shaw of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Dr. Robert D. Bullard of the Environmental Justice Resource Center at Clark Atlanta University and others. Clyburn represents communities along the I-95 corridor dubbed the ?corridor of shame? in South Carolina with record cases of diabetes, hypertension, stroke and prostate cancer. He believes such high accounts of health complications are due to the environment his constituents live in. Health care is a significant issue for all Americans, but issues of access to quality and affordable health care are more prevalent in minority communities. The dialogue looked at from where we have come, where we are currently, and where we can go from here.

Gullah/Geechee communities run along the US coastline from northern Florida through Georgia, South Carolina and into North Carolina.  The culture thrived on isolated Sea Islands until bridges and development began encroaching on these communities.
