Lebanon, Isreal violence statement

CONGRESSMAN GEORGE MILLER STATEMENT ON VIOLENCE IN MIDDLE EAST

WASHINGTON D.C.—Congressman George Miller (D-CA) today reacted to the ongoing violence in Lebanon and Israel. Over 450 Lebanese and Israeli persons, most of whom are civilians, have died in the conflict since July 12.

Miller’s statement is below.
“I am deeply saddened and very concerned by the ongoing and devastating violence in Israel and Lebanon and the enormous loss of innocent life it is causing. Just when it appeared that Lebanon had emerged from a long and dark period of chaos and when Israel had taken the very difficult steps of withdrawing from Lebanon and from the Gaza Strip, the renewed fighting is disturbing and dangerous.

“I am disappointed that the United States and its allies failed to agree yesterday to a plan for an immediate cease-fire. It is my hope that additional avenues will be pursued by the United Nations, our allies in Europe, and the United States, to bring a quick end to the fighting. The United States and its allies must continue to demand and achieve an immediate cease-fire in this conflict and they must establish an effective international force - combined with Lebanese troops - to disarm Hezbollah, keep the peace, and help to restore the Lebanese government and its military. This must be achieved. But I am not so naďve that I think that it will be easy.

School Construction investment called for

REPS. MILLER, CHANDLER, WOOLSEY CALL FOR
NEW INVESTMENT IN SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION
Bill Would Invest $32 billion in School Repair & Construction

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Reps. Ben Chandler (D-KY), George Miller (D-CA), and Lynn Woolsey (D-CA) today announced sweeping new legislation to provide $32 billion in matching grants and low-cost loans over the next five years to help schools make much-needed repairs and renovations and build new facilities.

“The terrible state of our school buildings both in Kentucky and around the country is appalling,” said Chandler, who introduced the bill. “In Kentucky, forty-seven percent of school facilities are ranked average to poor. It is my hope that this bill will be a good start in addressing some of the most basic needs of our children and teachers.”

WASHINGTON, DC – For the fifth time in less than two weeks, Republicans in the House of Representatives today voted to block a vote on legislation to increase the national minimum wage from $5.15 to $7.25 per hour. U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-CA), the senior Democrat on the House Education and the Workforce Committee and the author of the minimum wage legislation, strongly criticized Republicans’ continued opposition to a pay raise for America’s lowest-paid workers.
